In-Flight Entertainment System

This class project is about designing new immersive in-flight entertainment system. I mainly focused on visual design and interaction design.

Role & Responsibilities: Visual Design, Interaction Design

Timeline: March 2022 - May 2022

The Goal

More Immersive Experience

During the flight, passengers can enjoy the media in the limited space. The media and contents have to be visually appealing to passengers to grab their attention. As the restrictions due to the pandemic are gradually alleviated, the demand for the long-distance flight becomes increasing. To deliver better experience to travelers, in-flight entertainment system has to improve visually on the top to the content itself.

Immersive visual cues for media

Improved experience on media player

Novel features to provide better experience

Market Research / Analysis

Situational Background

  • Post-Covid

  • Increasing number of travels

    • In early 2020, around 20 percent of adults in the US are comfortable with traveling, flying on an airplane in early 2020. After Sprint 2022, over 50 percent of adults feel comfortable with flying on an airplane. (Morning Consult)

Design & System Background

  • Importance of user experience related inflight entertainment

    • 70 percent of passengers prefer seatback screens (Apex Global Passenger Survey)

    • Inflight entertainment is the most important variable for the customer satisfaction (Minitab)

    • Almost 40 percent of passengers watch movies during their flight

Product Structure

Before diving into designing works, I tried to think about the product structure and the flows first.

Wireframe

Components & Colors

I created button components with three different levels and three different states (Standard, Clicked, Disabled). Also, I used two different types of fonts (Urbane and Work Sans). Icons can increase the usability especially for the small backseat screens.

Prototypes

Welcome page & Main landing page

Main meus are shown in card blocks rather than in a simple list. The size of each menu represents the popularity that the bigger size of grid means the more frequently the passengers or users would use.

The first page of each media (movies and audio).

The image of movie posters or album covers will be filled in full screen. Featured movies or albums are highlighted with this unique layout.

Movie Player & Audio Player

Almost every airline does not support background play, which means passengers cannot explore other contents while the media is playing. In this new design, the background play will be available when users “minimize” the player. Also, users can easily change the media by using the playlist on the right side of the media players.

Background Play

When the player is minimized, the status bar appears on the top navigation bar. Users can open the player back by clicking the status bar.

Reservation

When users forgot making a reservation for their trip, they can make a reservation for their stay, rental cars, and some activities. Information can be auto-populated based on their flight information such as location and check-in date.

Interaction map and list give users to have better experience while exploring their reservations. Also, intuitive filter features increase the usability.
